Weekly Learning Update

Math
We continued with our learning around multiplication and we have been playing a variety of multiplication games to reinforce the concept.
Students in Grade 3 are expected to demonstrate an understanding of multiplication to 5 X 5 by modeling, representing and recording the process.

We also continued practiced our problem solving skills. Below is an open ended problem we solved this week. Ask your child to show you a way to solve it.
There are 25 wheels in the park. How many different tricycles and bicycles are there?

Language Arts
We began planning our Explorer stories this week. We started with brainstorming ideas of different places around the world that we could explore and why we would be exploring them. Next we thought of a problem that could happen to us on our adventure. Finally we thought of different ways we could attempt to solve the problem and a final solution. We have been visualizing our stories by drawing each part of the story on a 6-box plan. We have also begun thinking about sensory words and details that we can include in our writing to make our stories more exciting and interesting for the reader.
We are excited to share them with you at our Celebration of Learning!

Social Studies
This week we have been focusing on drawing pysanky eggs, using traditional symbols and colours.

Science
We learned more details about the animal groups, particularly the arthropods group. We also had a taxonomist challenge to classify and organize all of our information into a large classification chart.

We turned into Citizen Scientists this week and we are participating in the Calgary City Nature Challenge. Citizen scientists are ordinary people who study the natural world around them and collect data to submit into scientific databases. Our data is then used to help with animal conservation studies. We feel very proud to be doing our part to protect the environment. The challenge is from April 26-29. Try it at home this weekend together!
