Weekly Learning Update

Math
We continued learning about fractions in sets and wholes. We know that the denominator of a fraction represents all the equal parts that make up a whole or the total of a set. The numerator represents the number of parts. We have been practicing writing fractions in numbers and words as well as drawing fractions in wholes and sets. We have also played some fraction games to support and reinforce our learning.

Science
We have been learning more about animal conservation and the job of a conservationist. We read a book called A Voice for the Spirit Bears by Carmen Oliver. It is about the true story of a young boy who followed his passion to conserve the habitat of the rare spirit bear and the impact he made for the bears as well as animal conservation around the world. We also learned about Jane Goodall.

Social Studies
We finished up our learning about Ukraine this week. We researched different aspects about Ukraine on the computers, for example food, art, sports, beliefs, jobs and resources.

Language Arts
We did two different pieces of writing this week. We looked at a picture prompt of a tiny dragon sitting on a person's fingers and imagined where it came from and wrote stories based on this tiny creature. We also debated "What would you rather" topics and wrote about if we would rather be able to fly or be able to turn invisible. It was fun giving our opinions and justifications.

Art
Our Grade one buddies came today and we made pinch pots out of clay!

Weekly Learning Update

Math
This week we learned strategies to solve division problems. We continued relating division to multiplication and used similar strategies; repeated subtraction, making arrays, sharing between equal groups and skip counting.

We also practiced our mathematical communication skills through number talks and explaining our thinking and our strategies out loud during class discussions.

Ask me about this fun problem we did:

Language Arts

We finished writing our explorer stories this week and we have been focusing on editing for spelling, the 4 S's, correct tense (past or present), capital letters, punctuation, our personal writing goals and checking if it makes sense. We started typing our stories on the computer to publish.

We have also continued our read aloud Wild Robot and have been making lots of connections to our animal science learning through this book.

Science

In Science we revisited our Citizen Science work and we spent some more time outside observing our environment now that the weather has started to change. We challenged ourselves to sit quietly and observe the animal kingdom using our senses. We decided that we want to spread the word and we are going to educate our school about Citizen Science. Look our for our displays at the Celebration of Learning!

Art

We began an art project to go along with our explorer stories. The inspiration is Barbara Reid, an author who illustrates her books using plasticine art. We are making our own plasticine art based on a scene from our story. This week we started the background and have been getting used to warming, mixing and spreading plasticine. Check out Barbara Reid's website:

Physical Education

We got to have gym outside at the beginning of the week. We played a fun game called four corner soccer.

Weekly Learning Update

Math
We started learning about division. Division is splitting or sharing into equal groups. We have been relating division to what we already know about multiplication. We have been discussing fact families for example:

3 x 4 = 12
4 x 3 = 12
12÷3 = 4
12÷4 = 3

We also learned the mathematical terms of the parts of a division equation:

Language Arts
This week we started writing our explorer stories. During our planning stages we broke down our stories into sections. Beginning, problem, two solution attempts, solution and end. We have carefully been writing our stories section by section then going back and editing for spelling, punctuation, juicy words and all the elements that make a great story. We also shared our stories with partners and gave each other peer feedback, focusing on being kind, specific and helpful.

Our learning intention is to write an exciting and interesting story including detail and juicy words. Our success criteria is including words and phrases from each of the 4 S's:

- Sensory Words
- Specific Nouns
- Strong Verbs
- Show Not Tell

We are excited to share them with you at our Celebration of Learning!

We also started up our Reader's Workshop centers again this week.

Social Studies
This week we had fun trying to write words using the Ukrainian alphabet. We also used our textbooks to research more about Ukrainian culture and traditions. We watched an incredible video of traditional dancers in Ukraine.
